Tunisia: Ennahda Names New Tunisia Pm

| February 25, 2013 | 0 Comments

Tunisia’s ruling Ennahda party on Friday (February 22nd) named Interior Minister Ali Larayedh as prime minister.

Ennahda’s Shura Council met Thursday night to find a replacement for Hamadi Jebali, who resigned as prime minister this week after failing to win approval for a non-partisan government of technocrats.

Rached Ghannouchi, the leader of the Islamist party, met with President Moncef Marzouki on Friday morning to discuss Laârayedh’s appointment.

Marzouki will ask Laârayedh to assemble a new government within the next fortnight, presidential spokesman Adnen Mansar said.

The National Constituent Assembly (ANC) will be given two days to confirm Laârayedh as the new prime minister.

The political impasse began when the February 6th assassination of opposition leader Chokri Belaid sparked widespread demonstrations against the Ennahda-led government.
