Mr Desmond Nwosu, Spokesman of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), said the reappointment of Prof. Barineme Fakae as Vice-Chancellor of the university was on merit.

Nwosu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Wednesday that the transformation of the university by Fakae to a centre of academic excellence earned him the reappointment.

Gov. Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers had on Tuesday re-appointed Fakae in an acting capacity pending when the result of the screening of candidates would be concluded.

The reappointment came amid claims by the university’s Joint Action Council (JAC) that pressure was on Amaechi to circumvent due-process in the appointment of a vice-chancellor.

The group had earlier recommended that the state government should choose a new VC from other candidates.

Nwosu, however, refuted the claim that the governor was pressurised by some powerful individuals in the state to reappoint Fakae in acting capacity.

He said the reappointment of Fakae was on merit due to the massive transformation that the university had witnessed during his tenure as VC.

The university’s spokesman described the acting VC as a decent, hardworking achiever, who had taken the university to an enviable height.

“There’s massive transformation on campus; a lot of things have changed: the environment, infrastructure, equipment, everything.

“Before he (Fakae) came, most of our programmes were not accredited by the National University Commission; but as I speak with you, almost all are accredited, except two and I can assure you that those departments will get accreditation.

“Stakeholders and members of this university community, the unions, staff and students should cooperate with him because all authorities come from God.

“He has been re-appointed, so they should allow peace to reign; everybody should support him; let him perform his duties as vice-chancellor of this university.”(NAN)
