The Dickens Sanomi Golf Championship, which is one of the sports events of the 2013 Police Games will begin on Monday at the Port Harcourt Club (Golf Section), Rivers State, organisers have said. It ends on Thursday.

The first two days of the golf event are strictly for the Police athletes while the last two days would see invited guests also vying for honours in the championship.

This year ‘s event is named after late police officer, AIG Dickens Sanomi, whose immeasurable contributions to the Nigeria Police Force, were described as ‘timeless and deserving of even greater honour.’

A keen sportsman in his younger days, Sanomi played football for Urhobo College, Warri, and was invited to the junior national camp. He also represented the Nigeria Police Force in the hurdles, triple jump and long jump.

He is credited with discovering Nigeria’s first Olympic gold medallist, Chioma Ajunwa, at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. He discovered, recruited and nurtured her to become an Olympic gold medalist by winning the women’s long jump event at the 1996 Games.
