Oyigbo youths tackle Shell over lack of community project

Youths of Oyigbo community in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State have accused Shell Petroleum Development Company of playing politics with the development of the area.

They accused the Anglo Dutch oil firm of abandoning its agreement with the communities.

The youth president of the community, Mr. Israel Agumor, said: “The youths of Oyigbo and the entire communities are not happy with what is happening in our communities; there is no development and good project in the area, we are suffering in the midst of plenty. This community is one of the oil producing communities in Rivers State right from the inception of oil exploration in the state but we have nothing to show for it.

“So we are calling on Shell to go back to the agreement with the community because there was no time the community accepted that we will be dying in hunger while strangers in the community will be swimming in millions I think that will not happened,” Agumor said.

He advised Shell to formulate policies and programmes that would encourage mutual relationship with its host communities, stressing that the community leaders are willing to make peace with the company.

Nevertheless, youth leader warned that the company must not take the peaceful disposition of his kinsmen for granted.

Agumor also called on Rivers State Government to site more projects in Oyigbo community, noting that although the present administration has improved the lot of the area, saying, “it is not enough, government should site more project at the community as an oil community.”
