WorldStage Newsonline– The Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority, Mallam Habib Abdullahi has approved the purchase of more boats for water fronts’ patrol, motor cycles, patrol van and towing vans for the security department of the authority in order to ensure efficient and effective security at the nation’s seaports.

The General Manager in charge of security in the authority, Lt. Col Jamil .M. Tahir (Rtd.) disclosed this while addressing heads of security department from all port locations at their quarterly meeting which took place in Port Harcourt, Rivers State at the weekend, according to a statement signed by Chief M.K. Ajayi, NPA’s General Manager, Public Affairs.

Tahir said, baggage scanners and scanning machines which will scan vehicles, trucks and their drivers will also be installed at ports.

Col. Tahir pointed out that the equipment will not in any way conflict with Nigerian Customs operations because as he puts it, “customs are looking for contrabands, Nigerian Ports Security is looking for dangerous cargoes”.

The General Manager thanked the management of the authority for sponsoring some security officers for local and international courses last year and appealed for more in view of the dynamic nature of security challenges.

While commending his officers for their dedication to duty in the past year, he enjoined them not rest on their oars in order to reciprocate management’s gesture.

The quarterly meeting provides an avenue for heads of department at the port locations to exchange ideas, identify challenges, appraise performances and proffer solutions to security challenges.
