Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, in London on medical leave for more than three months, said his health is improving and he hopes to be home soon.

“I feel I could go home, but the doctors are in charge,’’ Buhari told his media team, which traveled from Nigeria to visit him, according to a statement Saturday from Femi Adesina, a presidential spokesman. “I’ve now learnt to obey orders, rather than be obeyed.’’

The former general, 74, has been in the U.K. since May 7 for treatment of an undisclosed illness, fueling concern about his ability to serve the remainder of his term that ends in 2019. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is in charge of Nigeria, which is struggling amid its worst economic slump in about 30 years.

Nigerian police used tear gas and water cannons this week to disperse protesters in Abuja, the capital, who were demanding that Buhari return or resign as president.
