Nigeria: NAFDAC Arrests Six for Circulating Fake Energy Drinks in Benin
Port Harcourt — The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has arrested six persons for allegedly circulating fake Power Horse energy drinks in Benin, the Edo State.
NAFDAC, in a statement signed by its South-South zonal Public Relations Officer, Cyril Monye, yesterday in Port Harcourt, said the arrest was made when its officials raided parts of Benin City, and that it impounded over 40 cartons of fake/unregistered energy drinks.
The agency said the raid was in a bid to rid the country of unwholesome, fake and unregistered products.
“The raid which was carried out by NAFDAC officials and a police detachment from Benin City, covered the Upper Mission Road Market, Airport Road, Boundary, Ihama and Adesuwa Streets in GRA. The exercise was sequel to complaints made to NAFDAC by the official distributors of the product; Charvet Nigeria Ltd of importation of a fake brand of their product by an unknown syndicate”, he said.
The agency further stated that the product which is being circulated in markets, shopping centers and stores in Benin City and other parts of the state, is a clone of the original product, but lacks NAFDAC registration number and other distinct features which distinguish it from the original product.
