Awka — FOLLOWING last week’s attack by gunmen on two police stations in Anambra State, during which three policemen were killed and few others inflicted with injuries, the senator representing Anambra South senatorial zone, Dr. Andy Uba, yesterday called for demolition and reconstruction of Ukpor Divisional police station razed by the hoodlums.
He also said there was need to put in place adequate security measures that would not expose security operatives to unnecessary danger.
The senator, who was accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bash Makama, said the police station at Amichi required renovation and fencing, while Ukpor police station should be relocated.
Senator Uba added that it was improper to expose policemen to an unfriendly working environment.
At Amichi police station, the police patrol van with registration number, NPF 9589 B and a Nissan Terra SUV car with registration number GG 323 LND riddled with bullets were shown to the senator.
The senator said having seen the extent of destruction, he would take up the matter with the Inspector General of Police, IG, on the need to carry out the reconstruction and updating of the facilities as soon as possible to enable the officers and men regain confidence in their job.
He said: “The Ukpor police station is very close to the road and this is not good for the users of the station. The station should be repositioned and fenced to provide security for the policemen.
“For the Amichi police station, there is need to fence it because it was due to the easy access to the station that made it possible for the hoodlums to attack the station.”
Senator Uba had earlier paid a condolence visit to Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bala Nasarawa, during which the CP briefed him on the attacks.
Uba described as painful a situation whereby people who were performing their genuine duties would attacked by gunmen.
He expressed happiness that the new CP was used to handling high profile crime matters, assuring him of adequate cooperation from the people of the state to enable him perform.
