Portharcourt — The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will receive a special fund in the budget to prosecute its numerous activities in 2013.

The Chairman, House Committee on Sports, Hon. Geoffrey Gaya revealed this while speaking at the NFF’ Annual General Assembly in Portharcourt.

Hon. Gaya who also stood in for his counterpart in the Senate at the occasion, noted that the National Assembly took the decision in order to ease the financial burden on the Federation in the coming year.

“We have three national teams participating in competitions and several World Cup qualifiers coming up in the same year.”

Gaya stressed that: “We know you are weighed down by logistics, we know you are weighed down by financial constrains and because we want you to do well, we at the National Assembly has insisted that in addition to your envelope, there should be a separate envelope in the budget to assist you.”

He applauded the NFF initiative in sourcing for funds from the public to sponsor the Super Eagles to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

NFF Act near passage

Hon. Gaya also said in addition to appropriating more funds for the NFF, the National Assembly was speeding the process of passing the NFF Act.

“We also know that you can’t succeed without an enabling environment. That is why the National Assembly in the past one year has pursued your bill.”

The bill was sponsored by Hon. Gaya as a means of nicking in the bud, the continuous crises that have bedevilled the football family in the past years.

When passed, the Bill will settle some gray areas in the NFF status and prevent unnecessary rancour.

While highlighting the benefits of the Bill when passed, Gaya said the clean copy was ready for third reading.

“Before we go for christmas recess, the clean copy would be ready for final passage”, the House Sports Committee Chairman added.
