Malian soldiers on Tuesday (January 22nd) patrolled the central town of Diabaly, seized from radical Islamists on Monday with the help of French troops, AFP reported.

The breakthrough after 12 days reportedly drove Ansar al-Din and their al-Qaeda allies out of key positions.

In related news Monday, the European Union proposed an international meeting on Mali, TAP reported. Representatives of the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations are expected to attend the February 5th talks in Brussels.

The head of the EU training mission in Mali was expected to arrive in the country on Monday to prepare for the deployment of the 450-strong force, TAP noted.
