Fenerbahce defender Joseph Yobo appears to have been involved in a major falling out with Nigeria national team coach Stephen Keshi.

A source from the Super Eagles camp in South Africa says the pair are only trying to manage the situation publicly.

The problem started before the captain arrived at their pre-tournament camp in Faro, Portugal in late December, after officials questioned his fitness level.

But Yobo played in three warm-up games to dispel speculations over his fitness. The problems further escalated after Nigeria’s opening game against Burkina Faso in Nelspruit when he suffered a minor ankle knock.

Left out of the starting line-up against Zambia and Ethiopia, Yobo is now keen to return to Istanbul after growing disillusioned with life at the African Cup of Nations.

The former Everton player insists he’s fit and ready to play contrary to reports in the local media and quotes credited to the coach.

This website has reliably gathered that this incident and other issues has led to an irreconcilable difference between coach and captain.

The most experienced player in the squad and most capped Nigerian, Yobo is still hanging around out of respect for the nation, fans and some Nigeria Football Federation officials.

There are strong indications that the player is expected to answer questions about the incident and make a strong statement at the end of Nigeria’s campaign at the tournament.

The coach Stephen Keshi has been involved in a series of controversies from his managerial days in Togo and Mali. Back in January 2006, Emmanuel Adebayor claimed that Keshi, then Togo coach, was trying to make money from his move to Arsenal.

Keshi was seen to be physically restrained from confronting Adebayor on the team bus in Egypt, after Togo lost to DR Congo in their opening Africa Cup of Nations game.

Although tempers seem to have cooled after Keshi accused Adebayor of indiscipline and trying to soil his reputation.
