Gambia: Imam Held Incommunicado

| December 28, 2012 | 0 Comments

The family of the detained Imam of Kanifing East Estate Mosque, Baba Leigh, who was taken away by two plain clothes men on 3 December 2012, told Foroyaa that he is yet to be released from detention and that his whereabouts is also still unknown.

Speaking to this reporter yesterday afternoon at the family residence in Kanifing East Estate, the family members explained that all efforts have been made to trace the whereabouts of their family head but without success.

They said the reason for his arrest and continued incommunicado detention is still unknown.

The family members described the situation as very worrisome to say the least. They also said that up to now they have not received any delegation or representation from the Supreme Islamic Council since his arrest.

Imam Baba Leigh was arrested since Monday, 3 December 2012, between 9pm and 10pm, by two plain clothes officers who claimed to be from the National Intelligent Agency (NIA) and since then held in detention without access to a lawyer.

Editor’s Note

Calls for his release by the domestic and international media, concerned personalities, EU and human rights organisations have been increasing by the day. Foroyaa will contact the family again to find out whether they have exhausted their search for the whereabouts of the Imam before drawing our own conclusion on the matter.
