Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar

Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, on Wednesday said he had deployed extra 500 policemen in Anambra State to effectively police the state.

Abubakar, who took delivery of 50 patrol vans and three Armoured Personnel Carriers from the state government, also said more area commands would be created in the state.

According to him, with the support the force  has received from the state, the command would live up to its responsibilities.

He warned policemen against intimidating  members of the public, saying anyone caught doing so would be dealt with.

Policemen, he added, should respect the rights of citizens and treat them with civility.

Presenting the patrol vehicles to the IG, Governor Peter Obi, who said insecurity was threatening development efforts in the state,  warned that unless it was checked, the state might not meet the Millennium Development Goals.

He said the state government would continue to fund the operations of the police, adding that his government would focus on fighting crime in 2013.

Obi said so far, the state had presented 350 patrol vehicles to security agencies in the state, while another 300 would soon be delivered to communities in the state.
