Less than than 72 hours to the highly anticipated February 16 general elections, the Nigerian Army has raised alarm over the alleged plan by some miscreants to use its uniform to perpetrate evils at the polling units.

In a statement by the deputy director of public relations of 6 Army division in Port Harcourt, Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, on Wednesday, February 13, the force disclosed that it uncovered the plan ahead of election having received intelligence report.

It, however, added that all hands are on deck to fish out the miscreants and get them arrested for proper prosecution

Army, in the statement, also warned the general public that anybody seen in military uniform at the polling units is an impostor, adding that its men can only been seen at strategic areas and places where they would be able to attend to break of peace and order.

Part of the statement read: “It has come to our notice that some sponsored miscreants are planning to use military-like fatigue dress, pretending to be troops of the Nigerian Army to perpetrate carnage at the polling centres.

“This plan has failed as no soldier is allowed to be seen in the vicinity of the polling area. Anyone seen in military uniform in a polling unit is an impostor and should be treated as such.

“Anyone with useful information about any security breach should please call 09027771482 immediately.

“We wish to use this medium to warn all troublemakers to have a change of mind and action as our troops will not tolerate any act by anyone to truncate the electoral process.”

The Nigerian Army, while promising fully effective security control on the election day, also restated its desire to stay neutral.
