DOZENS of road users were yesterday robbed around Igbo-Etche community in Rivers State following the siege at Eriebe in Oyigbo Local Government Area axis of the Aba/Port Harcourt highway, by tanker trucks.

The siege, which entered its second day on Wednesday, forced travellers from Port Harcourt to Oyigbo, as well as those travelling outside the State, to make a detour through the Igbo-Etche Road.

Nation Evening Express gathered that besides being compelled to pay higher fares, most of the commuters were dispossessed of their belongings by armed robbers who also laid siege to the lonely road.

One of the victims, Mrs  Juliana Okoronkwo, told our reporter that she was robbed of N50,000 along Igbo-Etche, while another victim, simply identified as Innocent, said he was dispossessed of about N20,000 along the same route.

Reports that at least one vehicle was snatched at gunpoint could not be independently confirmed as our reporter could not speak with the owner of the vehicle.

“Government should find a lasting solution to the problem between the tanker drivers and the army so that there can be peace in this area and in the State,” said one Julius, who lives at Oyigbo.

All efforts to talk to the Tanker Union Chairman of Rivers State proved abortive, but the Public Relation Officer of the

Commander 2 Brigade Operation Pulo Shield, Sector 2, Capt. Sunny Samuel, insisted that the tankers that were arrested for carrying illegally refined AGO, the command will have to verify the genuineness of the AGO from the loading point.

He said: “At the moment, investigations are on-going. They were not supposed to move at odd hours and they are also expected to present their document for verification, which they are yet to comply. They are not above the law.”
