Ameobi avoids Nigeria inclusion by ignoring calls

| January 5, 2013 | 0 Comments

Shola Ameobi has been omitted from Nigeria’s squad for the African Nations Cup, suggesting Newcastle have won their battle with the Nigeria Football Federation.

Magpies manager Alan Pardew has made it clear for several weeks that Ameobi, 31, would not be joining up with his country for the tournament in South Africa.

The former West Ham boss made the claims despite warnings from Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi that he would demand FIFA to take action against the club if the striker was not released.

“Shola’s refusal to answer calls gave Keshi no other option than to allow him to concentrate on his club,” Nigeria’s media officer, Ben Alaiya, told BBC Sport.

“The coach and team secretary made several attempts to reach Shola but there was no answer. The coach waited to hear back from him but a call never came.

“A decision on the next move will be made at the appropriate time.”
