Nollywood has been raking in big bucks for the movie industry, and has broken records while at it. This week, Weekend Magazine takes a look at the industry’s highest grossing

The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai

The sequel following The Wedding Party’ tops the list, making a whooping record breaking N500 million at the box office. That’s around N50 million more than the first movie. Taking off from the events after Dozie and Dunni’s wedding, this movie focuses on the wedding between Dozie’s older brother, Nonso and Dunni’s British bridesmaid, Deardre.

“The Wedding Party”

When ‘The Wedding Party’ came out in 2016, the effect the movie had was astounding, and cemented Kemi Adetiba as one of Nollywood’s most bankable directors. Making a sum of over N450 million at the box office, it was only pushed down a spot when the sequel came out in 2017.

Chief Daddy

Making a Christmas debut at the box office, ‘Chief Daddy’ was widely watched during the holidays, and also made it to Netflix as well. Grossing almost N400 million, it pushed the other two movies – ‘King of Boys’ and ‘Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons,’ which made big bucks, down the list.

King of Boys

Another Kemi Adetiba production, ‘King of Boys,’ made almost N250 million, with Sola Sobowale returning to star in another spectacle that blew audiences away, and those behind the movie, smiling to the bank. It isn’t an understatement to say that 2018 was quite the year for Nollywood, money-wise.

Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons

AY Makun ‘s ‘Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons,’ made a smashing N230 million in less than two months after it was released in 2018. Gathering some of Nollywood’s most celebrated acts, it was no surprise when it became a hit at the box office, becoming the third highest grossing movie of the year.
